At 6:15 that evening, Jim Bannon—with butterflies in his stomach and his heart racing—pulled the wagon up to the hitch rail in front of Callie’s Cottage Restaurant, which was small but elegant. The front of the place actually looked like a cottage, with a small peaked roof over what would be the porch and several cottage-style windows, each with small square panes.

Alyssa Rose McGuire was having a problem with her own heart racing. She turned and smiled at Jim. “I first noticed this restaurant just about two weeks ago. Quaint, isn’t it?”

“Yes. That’s one of the reasons I like it. Although, I have to tell you … I’ve never eaten here before. Many people have told me how good the food is, but I just never had a reason to go to a place as pleasingly unique as this.” He took a deep breath and smiled at her. “That is, until now.”

Alyssa blushed. “Thank you.”

He patted her arm. “I mean it. This is a very special occasion for me.” Jim jumped out of the wagon, tied the team to a post at one end of the hitch rail, and helped Alyssa down.

Alyssa looked up into his eyes. “Is anything wrong?”

“Oh, no, everything’s perfect! Come on. Let’s pick out a table.”

He took hold of her elbow and escorted her to a table for two in a front corner, which had windows on both sides. He pulled out a chair, assisted her as she sat down, and then eased onto a chair facing her.

“I like this spot,” Alyssa said. “That breeze is nice.”

“I ordered it just for you.”

At that moment a waitress walked up to the table bearing menus. “Good evening, folks, and welcome to Callie’s Cottage.”

Alyssa smiled up at her. “Thank you. This is really a nice place. I’m fairly new in Cheyenne, and I’ve never been here before.”

“Well, you’re in for a treat. The food here is first-rate.” The waitress handed each of them a menu and asked what they would like to drink. Both ordered cool tea.

When Jim opened the menu, he was relieved to find that the prices were quite reasonable. After they ordered their meals, Jim asked Alyssa what it was like to be a banker’s daughter. They were already deep in conversation when their meals arrived. They were so engrossed in each other that neither took much notice of the other customers coming and going.

Soon it was time for dessert, and both of them ordered apple pie. They lingered over it, talking about the blessings of
